Okay, ladles and jellyspoons.
I'm thinking of trying my hand at some freelance writing for a web magazine - and under their "Visual and Performance Arts" category, there's quite a bit of empty space following the circus, masks, and puppetry topics. I plan on amending this, obviously.
I have to send in two sample articles of no more than 600 words. My first sample article is going to be a review of Cirque Mechanics's "Birdhouse Factory." I have no idea what to do for my other article, and am open to suggestions.
Furthermore, if I get this job, I have to write ten articles every three months, so I'll probably need some suggestions in the future. Put down all sorts of ideas; they don't necessarily have to be circus-related, because I can pretty much write about anything I want (though I assume most of my writing will be in this category).
All right, guys - help a clown out.

+ Circus fonts!!! I could give you lots of resources there. + How circuses are represented visually/graphically... the graphic design of circus and performance (historic and contemporary)... oh man, I would love to help you write that. + Circus life on the road... varying from Cirque tours to little scrappy ones like Criss Cross + The new community tribes, like that book Freaks & Fire + The amateur and the expert in circus performance – how or when you're supposed to feel like you can do it too
Those are all things I know I would like to read about. or write about.

-freakshows/exploitation/exhibitionism in circuses of yore & today (carnies!) -gender representation & stereotypes in circus (i can give you some resources on that - think androgyny, strong women, bendy men, bearded ladies) -circus and political activism (arab/isreali youth circuses, circus amok gender-benders, bread and puppet) -street performing policies/permits/politics -circus schools/training (also, internationally!)
you could also easily break it down and do specific articles about specific circus disciplines/shows: -juggling clubs/ competetive juggling/ numbers-mathematic juggling -the fire-spinning community/world -surging popularity of hula hooping -flying trapeze as a sport -sports acrobatics/sports gymnastics etc.
-you could also review movies with circus/performing arts slants, (Children of Paradise, the Chaplin biopic, the existential puppet drama Strings, Cirque du Soleil documentaries)
such a good idea!
